What is the Energy Star program?

On many appliances, there’s a big yellow sticker that says ‘Energy Guide’ and tells you the energy efficiency of that particular appliance and compares it to the energy use of other appliances. This estimated energy use gives you an idea of how much energy you could use and spend, depending on your local energy price and how you use the particular appliance.

On the Energy Guide, you will see the energy star logo. This logo represents the Energy Star program, a government energy savings program supported by the Energy Department and the Environmental Protection Agency. This program helps you and other consumers make energy and money-saving decisions on such home purchases as HVACs, water heaters, heat pumps, central air, and other home comfort appliances we use every day.

The ENERGY STAR program helps consumers by providing estimates of annual energy use, annual cost, and lifetime cost to operate for ENERGY STAR labeled products so they can make informed decisions. In addition, by marking these high-efficiency items, you can rest assured that all these products go through rigorous testing to qualify for the energy star certification set by the EPA and Department of Energy.

For central air conditioners specifically, they have all been tested on the following criteria: use less than 8% energy over other new central AC models and has a blower motor to send cool air into the duct system. A Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 15 and above is also considered good for energy efficiency and cost over the season.

Energy Star recommends replacing your HVAC every 10-15 years because of new advancements in energy efficiency and savings. For example, in 2021, the program rated several different brands’ central air conditioning and air source heat pumps with energy savings starting at 26% to 48% over the Federal Minimum Standards.

The higher the percentage, the better energy efficiency and better for the environment. So when you’re out shopping for a new HVAC, make sure you see the Energy Guide sticker with the Energy Star program logo on it so you can buy with confidence and know you’re buying the right appliance for your home and the environment.
